7 Pin ‘S’ type caravan wiring

7 pin ‘S’ type plugs and sockets are usually used on caravans to supply power to the reverse light and give auxiliary power to other systems such as fridges, internal lights and charging systems. This was replaced in 2008 by the 13 pin Euro plug on all new caravans.

It is recommended that a split-charge relay should be wired into your ‘S’ type caravan wiring. At a set voltage this relay will divert the power that usually charges you vehicles battery to the auxiliary systems in your caravan. This is useful for charging auxiliary batteries and powering appliances like fridges and freezers while you are driving. Click here for more information on split-charge relays.

Below is the wiring diagram for this plug and socket.

7 pn trailer wiring

Pin No. Colour Function
1 Yellow Reversing Light
2 Blue 12v ignition on (battery charging)
3 White Earth for terminal 2 and 4
4 Green 12v Permanent (Direct from battery)
5 Brown Revising sensors (usually spare)
6 Red 12v ignition on (Fridge)
7 Black Earth for Terminal 6

hi i was looking at ur diagram and wondering if terminals 2 and 6 could be linked out as they do the same job and is it ok to earth terminals 3 and 7 at the same point on the towing vehicle ?? thankyou mike

  • Pete says:

These could be linked if you used a heavy enough supply / Return cable but the 7 core S type cable would not be suitable.

  • Iain (D&A Autos Byfleet) says:

Just run the 2 earth wires to a good earth point put ring tags on each one this shares the load.

hi,i have a car tranceporter trailer with a winch with own battery & want to connect a charging system to battery ,would i be right in thinking to conect the blue to live of batt & white to earth, regards nigel

  • Kris says:

Yes this is correct when using the ‘S’ type plug. If you try this with the ‘N’ type plug it will not work.

    Thanks.
