Maximum trailer towing weights

When building a trailer the most important thing to take into consideration is the gross weight of the trailer. This affects the suspension, wheels and tyres and the coupling. Your trailer is only as strong as the weakest of these parts.

Legal trailer weights

The Maximum Gross weight for an unbraked trailer is 750kg

The maximum Gross weight for a braked trailer with ‘over-run’ brakes is 3500kg

All of the weights above apply to towing on UK public highways only. Not all vehicles can tow these weights, please read your Log Book to find your cars maximum towing weight.

Also, check your driving license before towing. From 1997 entitlement to tow trailers was withdrawn from all new licenses, an additional driving test must now be taken.
